Using Context to Decode Unfamiliar Words in CELPIP Reading

Practice inferring meanings of tough words by reading a passage with six challenging terms and solving related inference questions.
Why Handling Unfamiliar Vocabulary Matters in CELPIP Reading
The CELPIP Reading section often presents words you may have never seen before. Instead of panic, your best tool is to use the surrounding text to infer the meaning. This skill helps you understand the passage and answer questions accurately.
Context clues can be definitions, examples, synonyms, antonyms, or descriptions nearby the unknown word. Learning how to actively search for these clues will boost your comprehension and confidence during the test.
Original Practice Passage with Six Unfamiliar Words
Read the passage below carefully. It includes six challenging words in bold. Don’t stop at the words—look at the sentences before and after to figure out what they mean.
"In the quaint town of Riverton, residents cherish their **arboretum**, a space where rare tree species flourish. The **caretakers** ensure that each plant thrives by monitoring soil moisture and controlling pests. Last autumn, a **mysterious** illness caused some leaves to **wither**, alarming the community. Scientists hypothesized that an **invasive** insect was the culprit, an unwelcome visitor disrupting the ecosystem’s balance. Thanks to prompt action, the situation stabilized, preserving the arboretum’s **vibrancy**."
